Candidate will work across the global businesses to support growth and direct innovation support for medium and longer term innovations in coordination with cross-functional teams. Position will also collaborate directly with chemist, pilot facility, operations, third party tollers and equipment manufacturers. The expectation is that the candidate will directly support long term polymer Research & Development team. The individual will scope out equipment and run capital improvement projects associated with new process development and pilot facilities in North America. The candidate will also assist with projects related to new product transfer to the commercial production group and replacement of depreciated equipment. The ideal candidate will have experience in a process R&D setting with broad knowledge of multiple unit operations.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Work closely with scientists within global technology platforms, as well as, regional leaders supporting all aspects of scale up, capital engineering, and R&D lab operations.
Work with senior engineers to identify new/alternate process technologies, develop initial investment estimates and scoping possible scale up partners.
Develop plans and estimates for capital improvements. Manage capital projects for new research equipment and upgrades to pilot facility that better enable scale up to commercial scale capabilities.
Work closely with contractors, vendors and third party solution providers to ensure scope of work is met.
Support day-to-day efforts to optimize and document pilot plant processes and new product development.
Planning and execution of experiments related to optimizing existing technologies.
Participate in the development of promising technologies into viable processes at the pilot and commercial scale.
Conduct experimental designs to optimize process performance.
Apply advanced statistical concepts to the evaluation of development and commercial in-process data. Strong Design of Experiments experience applied to process development.
Understand product parameters and how they are affected by changes in the manufacturing process
Manage experimental product campaigns
Awareness of Process Safety Management (PSM) principles to ensure new process and equipment installations meet requirements.
Work in a safe manner and ensure that safety practices are implemented and followed for new equipment installations.
2+ years experience chemical scale up and new process technology implementation
Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering - required
Master's or Ph.D. in chemical engineering -considered
Strong experimental skills and the ability to identify process improvements
Strong knowledge of modeling techniques and tools
Strong project management skills - required
Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize and work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplined team
Ability to drive projects to completion
Proven ability to communicate and develop influential relationships at multiple levels within an organization, and lead in a positive and collaborative manner
Strategic thinker with strong implementation skills
Willing to travel 10%+ per year locally and globally
Polymer science/ bench scale development a plus
Process analytical technology implementation experience a plus
