Avery Dennison is looking for a dynamic individual with experience in materials characterization and demonstrated strength particularly in Chromatography. The position will be with the Materials Science and Characterization (MSC) Group, which primarily supports R&D activities at Avery Dennison’s Mentor, OH location, chartered to support and resolve technical problems from long term projects to urgent manufacturing and quality issues stemming from across Avery Dennison’s global operations. Astute problem solving by expertly “hyphenating” sound separation science principles to spectroscopic structure elucidation along with pertinent data analytics (e.g. Chemometrics) are most desirable traits we are seeking.
Conduct analyses using Chromatography techniques (GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, GPC) and Barrier Property Measurements (Oxygen, Moisture) to solve challenging problems in the fields of chemistry, material science, and engineering that are important to Avery Dennison. The main focus will be to characterize and investigate polymeric materials.
Interpret data, write technical reports, and communicate analytical results with MSC and divisional scientists in a high-quality, professional, and timely manner.
A background including Spectroscopy and interfacing to separation techniques is a plus.
A background in LIMS / SDMS / Knowledge Management is also desirable.
Adeptly troubleshoot & maintain and administer existing Chromatography and Mocon instruments. Seek out and evaluate new characterization tools and techniques to support new product development and cogent problem-solving needs.
Apply skills and knowledge in the field of Chromatography & Statistics to develop and implement test methods for problem solving and new product development projects.
Inventory and order materials to maintain lab supplies in conjunction with other lab staff.
Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs, committees, or teams and by conducting laboratory and pilot plant safety audits.
Ph.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or related discipline.
Hands-on experience utilizing Chromatography including maintenance and troubleshooting of chromatographic instrumentation.
Strong preference given to individuals who have experience characterizing polymeric materials and working at the interface of separations science and spectroscopy. HPLC-MS, LCMS, Thermal Analysis, and Rheology
A background interfacing separation techniques to mass spectroscopic detection such as ESI, APCI, MALDI-TOF, etc. is a plus.
Additional background in vibrational spectroscopy is a plus.
Knowledge of polymers/coatings and techniques to characterize as well as a good breadth in general, organic, and polymer chemistry principles and practices is desirable.
Effective written and oral communications.
Good computer skills; experience with Chromatography data systems and LIMS is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to think critically and solve problems using the above mentioned disciplines and techniques.
High level of motivation, initiative, and energy.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
Ability to interact effectively with both internal and external customers.
