Job Description

We are currently looking for a Government Affairs Manager for North America, to be based ideally in either Mentor, OH (near Cleveland) or the Washington, DC, area, and reporting to the Vice-President & Associate General Counsel, Americas. This person will be a trusted advisor for providing and implementing some of the most critical pivotal initiatives for Avery Dennison and all of its businesses in North America (the United States and Canada). The person in this role will help drive agendas for engagement with government stakeholders and be a vital advocate in the ecosystem for Avery Dennison’s role in sustainability and the digital transformation of products, supply chains, and labeling.

Importantly, this role will partner broadly with Avery Dennison leadership, supply chain and procurement, marketing, and innovation, among other internal partners. They will cultivate key relationships and partnerships with federal and state legislative bodies and agencies to represent and protect the company’s business priorities and interests.

This role is a great opportunity for a candidate to help build a government affairs function and have a pivotal influence that ensures Avery Dennison is at the forefront of the ESG and climate-related legislative agendas at the federal and state levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and map stakeholders and influencers in light of Avery Dennison’s strategies.

  • Have, maintain, and communicate internally a deep and practical understanding of federal and state legislation and regulations and connect these to opportunities for our business interests, with a focus on ESG and innovation and assisting leadership with developing appropriate business strategies.

  • Develop, maintain, and leverage relationships with Members of Congress and their key staff, the Administration, industry peers, and trade associations to build trust, mitigate potential obstacles, convey the company's priorities, and impact key public policy objectives.

  • Develop, in partnership with company leadership and business unit partners, the company's government relations and public policy strategy and agenda as it relates to the company’s strategy and helps prioritize actions and resources.

  • Ensure Avery Dennison has insights into the direction of legislative and regulatory developments so that the company meets its sustainability goals and ensures compliance with climate-related requirements.

  • Represent Government Affairs with the NA Sustainability Council and other related projects and workstreams.

  • Demonstrating knowledge of the legislative and regulatory landscape, recommend and influence commercial strategies.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with outside government relations consultants and advisors and manage those relationships.

In This Role, You Will

  • Develop a government affairs strategy for the North America region, with a focus on the United States

  • Map and analyze US federal and state political and regulatory environment to support the government affairs strategy

  • Work closely with government stakeholders and others who have influence, (associations and key businesses, and NGOs) to ensure we are always maintaining and building on the outstanding working relationships we have with the industries and environments in which we operate

  • Position Avery Dennison in key national and state debates to support our business growth and stability

  • Support the development of policy positions, strategies, and execution of tactics to influence state and federal legislative activity that are strategic to Avery Dennison.

  • Develop ideas for regulatory or legislative initiatives that may benefit the company.

  • Represent Avery Dennison in organizations and events, identifying suitable opportunities for the leadership team to participate

  • Carrying out risk analyses to make improvements where needed


What do you bring?

  • Deep substantive knowledge and understanding of sustainability-related developments in the United States and Canada, including for example Extended Producer Responsibility, single-use plastics, material circularity, United Nations global plastics' treaty, Scopes 3 emissions, and the evolution of digital products and solutions.

  • Excellent understanding of policy and legislative development processes and influences.

  • Excellent analytical, counseling, negotiating, communicating, and interpersonal skills with sound legal and ethical judgment;

  • Excellent in strategic writing and in drafting texts such as position papers and guidance notes;

  • Ability to develop relationships and work collaboratively with federal and state legislative and administration officials, a multi-disciplinary team of business personnel, legal and other internal experts, and external consultants;

  • Ability to support organizational changes and change management initiatives in response to legislative and regulatory development;

  • Highly developed values, ethics, integrity, and focus on diversity and inclusion.

What We Expect From You

  • Advanced degree (or equivalent practical experience) in political science, law, business, economics, or a field related to our issues (e.g., environmental science or chemistry).

  • A J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to a state bar/license to practice law is strongly preferred.

  • 5-10 years experience within government affairs, public policy, communications, or related field; politically aware and equipped to develop relationships and dialogue with senior government officials and politicians, as well as with other industry, association, and NGO stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze legislation, regulations, and key policy issues in light of the company’s strategic goals and to focus on those issues that advance (or could potentially inhibit) the company’s competitive business interests.

  • Experienced in developing effective government engagement campaigns that serve business interests

  • Self-starter, results-driven, independent but highly collaborative who quickly establishes connections

  • Highly customer-focused in approach to teamwork and collaboration, with a great sense of urgency and drive toward achieving goals

  • Excellent understanding of US policy and legislation processes and landscapes especially in the areas of climate, digitization, circular economy/packaging, and chemicals; good understanding of California legislative processes a plus

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail

  • Well-suited to work in a highly dynamic, matrix corporate environment; ability to positively influence and encourage others to achieve goals
