The Global Director of Material Science and Analytical Testing will have responsibility to strengthen Avery Dennison’s materials science expertise, to solve real-world problems with smarter solution to customers and industries we serve. This role requires not only a strong, relevant technology background, but also demonstrated curiosity, creativity, and futuristic thinking about business possibilities that connect the present to the future. This role reports to the Global Vice President of the Polymer, Adhesive and Coating center of excellence in the Label and Graphic Materials Business.


In this role as Global Director, Material Science and Analytical Testing, delivering on these responsibilities is critical to success:

  • Strategy Development - Partner with Business Unit’s R&D and Marketing to develop the strategy for material science expertise development, and to create and execute technology roadmaps aligned to the strategy.

  • Executes disruptive materials science research programs/projects to greatly expand scientific know-how leading to faster new product and process developments.

  • Provide leadership to select global research and development initiatives.

  • Set research and development strategies and monitor project and experiment progress and success.

  • Provides technical consultation, coordination, and/or staff support to various strategic projects and programs.

  • Establish and build relationships with external companies, institutes and universities as needed to support efforts.

  • Provide input to IP and acquisition strategy. Maintain knowledge of relevant industry and IP landscape.

  • Organization Development - Develop a team of engineers and scientists to deliver on the business goals, and build future leaders through thoughtful succession planning. Includes mentoring, knowledge sharing and coaching in areas including product development, project management, data analysis, scientific rigor, and intellectual property management.

  • Perform management duties, exercising usual authority concerning staff, performance appraisals, promotions and terminations. Ensuring safe and consistent work practices among the team.

  • Project Leadership - Provide oversight of complex and sometimes global projects.

  • Direct Analytical Testing to support ongoing business and R&D needs with quality and speed.


  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Engineering or related discipline (required) with postdoctoral experience (preferred).

  • 10+ years of experience with demonstrated track record of technology leadership.

  • Extensive technical experience with surface chemistry, material science, colloid chemistry, dispersion sciences, chemistry of interfaces, and pertinent application sciences.

  • Ability to conceptualize and champion complex technical efforts (transformational and transversal).

  • Authorship of significant and relevant patents and papers is preferred.

  • Knowledge of consumer goods, electronics, branding, and other key aspects of B2C companies is a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies

  • Highly developed collaboration capability – working through matrices while driving project execution

  • Strong communication skills: excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to technical and non-technical personnel, group presentations

  • High degree of ingenuity and creativity

  • Domestic and international travel (40%)
