Job Description

Advanced Materials Solutions (AMS) provides global expertise in front-end innovation acceleration, ecosystem scouting, opportunity de-risking, core adhesive technologies, coatings and novel film chemistry.

Hands-on Research & Development Scientist with technology and product development responsibilities in the development of energy cured materials with primary emphasis on acrylic systems.  The scientist will have demonstrated skills in photochemical processes, acrylic polymerization, polymer compounding and formulation, and possess a fundamental understanding of rheology.  The position spans basic polymer research, post-polymerization formulation and process modifications for both technology platform and customer-specific initiatives with a focus on energy cure systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Conduct hands-on polymerizations of adhesives and coatings via multiple free radical mechanisms including; thermal, actinic, controlled architectured and associated polymer/adhesive characterizations.  Responsibilities span laboratory discovery, pilot scale-up, and commercial process development.

  • Build and expand core energy cure technology through careful study of the literature, new scientific discovery, external development and development of intellectual property.

  • Lead project teams doing basic research and customer-driven R&D in the area of energy cured systems.  Develop and implement comprehensive technical project plans. Determine resources, actions and timelines for project. Make recommendations to terminate a project due to feasibility issues.  Supervise and coach technician and lab support colleagues

  • Patent liaison work with corporate council regarding right to market, patent applications and office actions.  Assist other chemist in patent activities and filings.

  • Transfer knowledge to fellow chemists via presentations, technical reports and day-to-day interaction.  Train and coach junior colleagues in the theory and application of conventional and new polymerization technology.

  • Represent the organization as the prime technical contact on contracts and projects.  Interact with senior external personnel on significant technical matters often requiring coordination between organizations.

  • Actively participate in process safety management and employee safety programs.  Help drive continuous improvement via inputs into raw material selection and process modifications.

     

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Material Science, Polymer Science, or related field or BS/MS with appropriate years of experience in photochemical mechanisms, polymer design, synthesis and scale-up.

  • Experience in industrial product development using energy cured technology is highly desired.

  • Up to 10 years R&D experience in acrylic polymerization, acrylic pressure sensitive industry a plus. 

  • Formulating and compounding of energy cured systems to finished product. 

  • Thorough knowledge of rheology characterization and analytical/applications testing of pressure sensitive adhesives.

  • Synthesis and formulation experience in complementary chemistries and technologies such as urethanes, silicones, epoxies, hot melts and radiation curing.

  • Track record of implementing creative and innovative technologies.

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal & written communication skills.

  • Well-developed time management skills with the ability to work on and/or lead multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Proven track record of leading multi-functional teams comprised of R&D, Operations, Legal, and Commercial/Customer personnel.

  • Ability to foster creativity/innovation while ensuring project progress and lab productivity
